April is Fair Housing Month, in commemoration of the signing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, and familial status. commemorating April 11, 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 on April 11, 1968, which was meant as a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The 1968 Act expanded on previous acts and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, (and as amended) handicap and family status. Title VIII of the Act is also known as the Fair Housing Act (of 1968).
The Rice County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) was established in 1978 with a mission to provide a sufficient supply of adequate, safe and sanitary dwellings in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Rice County;
• To clear and redevelop blighted areas;
• To perform those duties according to comprehensive plans;
• To remedy the shortage of housing for low- and moderate-income residents; and
• To redevelop blighted areas, in situations in which private enterprise would not act without government participation or subsidies.
In order to fulfill its mission, the HRA administers a variety of rental-assistance programs, including the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program and project-based Section 8, income-based rental assistance programs for households earning less than 50% of the area median income; for a family of four to qualify, they would need to earn less than $50,450 per year. The HRA is currently developing Twin Oaks, a single-family homeownership neighborhood for household earning less than 115% of area median income, $116,035 for a family of four.
